Update on Nicola
Dear all,The palliative care consultant came to see Nicola yesterday morning to say that there is no longer any treatment available to us. When they looked at the chest x-ray and and liver tests they discovered that the cancer is advancing rapidly and that is what is causing Nicola's breathlessness and pain. Nicola is on a very busy surgical ward, but she really needs constant attention and expert pain control and so the consultant has suggested that she be transferred to a hospice where the pace is much slower and where there are experts who have the time to make patients as comfortable and pain free as possible. We don't know which hospice it will be yet but we will probably hear in the next day or two.
We are all so very sad about this news but the family are being magnificent and Nicola is full of hope and courage, her faith is like a solid rock, she is such a brilliant example to us. Abigail, Hannah, Sam and I had a lovely time when we visited yesterday. We saw a very beautiful sunset from Nicola's window and I felt inspired to read from the supremacy of Christ passage in Colossians 1. Just as I got to verse 20 there was a long vertical whispy cloud directly above the sunset with an aeroplane vapour trail passing behind it producing a majestic, towering cross just for a second or two, I wish you could have all been there to see it. ( the room might have been a bit crowded) We thought, perhaps, that the sunset was sent just for us and that it was saying 'all will be well'.
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.
For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.
He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fulness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross. Colossians 1:15-20
With much love,
Phil

Words on their own are insufficient to express what we want to say at this difficult time, but we share a common hope, a sure and certain hope, of which Nicola has been a true example, that we are in the Father's hands, and nothing, absolutely nothing can ever separate us from his love.
